Whenever I see an E39 540i... I think:

Eh, a few clicks on Summit Racing and I’m sure you can have everything to overhaul that for minimal cost. A bargain rebuild kit for a small block Chevy runs $200-$300 so a BMW couldn’t be more than $500, right?

Buy it and then post on BMW forums asking where you can buy Dinan badges for your Beemer.

Price seems a little high. I say do it though.
I bought one and its amazing when I’m not worrying about how much it cost to fix.

Just for the halibut, a quick search on fleabay found a bunch of used 4.4 V8s out of 5s and 7s for under $1,500. Depending on how much a rebuild kit cost, I'd be tempted to find a local shop to do any machine work and get with a BMW guru to assemble the engine afterwards. This would *not* be for a DD though. My projects tend to take a bit longer than planned.

I’d be very interested in finding out how much a rebuild kit for that engine actually costs. I assume I was quite wrong with my plucked-from-my-ass tongue-in-cheek guess.

Depending on what that ‘02 needed, it could be as simple as a bore & hone with pistons, rings and bearings. Or it could be much worse. I found a reman long block for $4,400 on Ebay as a reference. Although for that kinda dough I’d seriously consider a 400hp LSx. Side benefit: pissing off the BMW owners groups at shows.
